Fullerton, CA – January 30, 2025 – A small plane crashed into a warehouse near Fullerton Municipal Airport on Tuesday afternoon, killing two people and injuring 19 others. The aircraft, a Van’s RV-10, went down shortly after takeoff, sparking a fire and causing significant damage to the building.
Crash Details
The plane took off from Fullerton Municipal Airport at approximately 2:07 PM PST. Just minutes later, the pilot requested an emergency return but was unable to make it back. At 2:09 PM, the aircraft crashed into a furniture manufacturing warehouse located in the 2300 block of Raymer Avenue, about 1,000 feet from the airport perimeter.
The impact triggered a large fire, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Casualties and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that both occupants of the aircraft, the pilot and his 16-year-old daughter, were killed in the crash.
Inside the warehouse, 19 people sustained injuries. Eleven were transported to local hospitals, while eight others were treated on the scene for minor injuries. Officials said most injuries resulted from the fire and debris.
Emergency Response
Firefighters and paramedics arrived within minutes of the crash, evacuating more than 200 employees from the warehouse and nearby businesses. The fire, which spread rapidly through the building, required a four-alarm response before it was brought under control.
City officials have since declared the warehouse structurally unsafe, preventing reentry.
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Early reports indicate that the pilot did not specify the nature of the emergency before attempting to return to the airport.
Investigators will review maintenance records, pilot experience, and possible mechanical failures as part of their probe.
Community Reaction
Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support for those affected.
“Our hearts go out to the families impacted by this devastating incident,” Jung said. “The city will work closely with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and provide assistance to those in need.”
This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about aviation safety near urban areas, with local officials urging a review of flight regulations for small aircraft operating near populated zones.
